What You See Depends on Where You Stand

Here we are as a nation on a complete standstill. I have never worked on a quilt that speaks so closely to the time we are living right now as this quilt. As of today the government has been shutdown for 30 days with no end in sight. It does not matter who you think is wrong or who’s fault it is, you know this is not right. As a stable, working country, we should have a government that functions.

I finally finished my piece What’s the Use? Like the government, I was at a standstill. I finally came to a point were I was satisfied with it. It is not perfect but it is finished. Sometimes we have to compromise and not be paralyzed by perfection. Sometimes we don’t get everything we want. Someone needs to tell our congresspeople.

What’s the Use?

Statue of Freedom

The Statue of Freedom stands on top of our Capitol building. The establishment is crumbling. Freedom has fallen. As she lies helpless on the floor she whispers “Do something”. That is the collective hope of the entire nation.

The quilt has a hidden message. Depending on your perspective, whether you look at it from the right or from the left, you get a different message. That is a reflection of our country. Both ideological sides are not getting the same messages and that is why we can’t agree on basic facts.

The purpose of Congress is to represent the people. First I thought that Congress is not working as intended because it was not doing anything to benefit the American people. Now I realize that it is working as a representative of us. We are so divided that if you put us in a room, you could not get us to agree on anything either. We get the government we deserve.
