What are we losing?

This quilt has tken me longer than usual but it is because I have had many interruptions. Life happens. It is finally finished and my series Not What I Taught You is taking shape! The quilt shows a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and he is sad. What would he think of the state of our country today?

What are we losing?

Lincoln’s biggest concern was to keep the nation together. Today we are so divided. Everything that happens becomes a political controversy. One side thinks one thing so the other side has to pick the opposite. Lincoln would not be happy right now.

I also think about how much emphasis he would put on our value the “all men are created equal”. Are we treating everyone as our equals? Some of the voices against diversity imply that if you are not a white male, you must not be doing a good job and you got there because of special treatment. People of color, women, and the disabled are not asking for special treatment. We just want things to be fair. Yes, we are taking opportunities from white males but those opportunities have been taken from us for centuries.

Diversity has always been part of this nation and that is one thing that has made us special. You cannot move to any other country and not be considered a foreigner as long as you work hard and are a good citizen. Do we want to lose that?
